Gorey RFC Start Under 14's Campaign With Two Fine Wins

Carlow RFC  5 - Gorey RFC 10

Gorey RFC Under 14's kicked off their South East League campaign away to Carlow last weekend. In perfect conditions Gorey made a sluggish start against a very strong Carlow pack who showed impressive ball carrying from their forwards throughout the half.

Gorey soaked up the pressure with forwards Andy Kinsella and Lloyd Stephens especially strong in the tackle.
Kicking off the second half scoreless Gorey upped the tempo and showed fine backline handling to break the deadlock ten minutes in with an excellent try from in-form centre Joseph Naughton. Carlow rallied strongly putting the Gorey pack under intense pressure inside their own 22 to level proceedings with a well worked try off the back of some ferocious rucking in the build-up.

With the score at 5-5 and the referee calling last play Gorey scrum half Charlie McGuckin flashed clean ball out to his backline from a scrum on his own 22. Superb hands from Fionn O'Loughlin and the excellent Michael Duke at centre released Joseph Naughton who carried to half way. With the Carlow cover closing Naughton kicked through for winger Cathal O'Reilly to chase. Showing superb composure Cathal won the chase and touched down to secure an unlikely Gorey victory and the points for the current South East Champions.

St Mary's RFC  19 - Gorey RFC  25

Between South East and Leinster League fixtures Gorey travelled to St Marys RFC on Sunday morning last lining out against the Dubliners under 14 ‘A' team. St. Mary's stunned Gorey by opening the scoring direct from the kick off, running in an easy converted try with the Gorey defence caught flat. Gorey responded within minutes with winger Cathal O'Reilly skinning the opposition backline to score a superb try under the posts. Gorey then went into a 10-7 lead when outside centre Sean Bardan split the Mary's defence to score with some style. Gorey were now very much fired up and went in again within 5 minutes with winger Jack Minogue breaking from the half way line leaving the Mary's defence trailing. Out half Jack O'Mahony slotted a superb conversion in difficult conditions. Mary's rallied with a converted try leaving the tie finely balanced. With just 10 minutes remaining P.J. Barnes emerged from the back of a fierce Gorey ruck to power through the Mary's defence scoring superbly. Mary's weren't done however and responded again with an excellent try from their number 8 who impressed throughout. From the restart Gorey won possession and after some superb phase play from our forwards were awarded a penalty In front of the on the Mary's posts. Up stepped Jack O'Mahony to slot the penalty and seal victory for the visitors. Our entire squad played their part on the day well done to all. As always a huge thanks to our travelling parents and supporters.
