Gorey Seniors Secure Bonus Point Win

League leaders Gorey secured the all-important bonus point with a hard earned win over bottom of the table Carlow. The score line suggests an easy win for the home team, but it was anything but as the score line of 34 - 13 does not do justice as to how hard Gorey had to work to secure this win.

The home team started well and on the ten minute mark No 8 Jeff Dunne rounded off a good attack for Brendon Spears to convert. From the restart, Carlow worked their way into the Gorey 22 and after some sustained pressure were awarded a penalty in front of the posts to bring the score to 7 - 3. It was not long until Gorey stretched their lead when Captain Jordan Ahern crashed over to take the score to 12 - 3. Gorey seemed to take their foot off the gas, as Carlow put some late pressure on with halftime approaching, and after a good spell Carlow scored a try to reduce the lead to 12 - 10 to the sound of the halftime whistle.

The second half started with Gorey back on the attack but they were finding Carlow hard to breakdown. A Brendon Spears penalty, followed by a Carlow penalty left the score at 15 - 13 with 15 minutes left on the clock. Gorey finally started to find some space as they upped the tempo and were rewarded when Jeff Dunne rounded off a good Gorey attack. At this stage Gorey had their tails up and moved the ball wide at every opportunity and were soon rewarded again when Brendon Spears crossed the whitewash to secure the bonus point.

Gorey had some good performances with Jeff Dunne, Killian Breen and Richard Deering the pick of the pack, Brendon Spears, Darren Dunne and Andrew Walsh showed well in the backs.
