WALSH'S HAT TRICK SENDS GOREY THROUGH TO 2ND ROUND OF TOWNS CUP   31/01/2016

After last weeks heroics in the League, against near neighbours Enniscorthy, Gorey had the small matter of the first round of the Provincial Towns Cup. The opposition on Sunday was Dundalk but as their firsts have advanced to the AIL league it was their second string that provided the opposition. But the Towns Cup is noted for upsets and the home team were taking nothing for granted and a full strength team took to the field.

The match kicked off with a strong wind blowing from the clubhouse end. Gorey were at sorts as the wind at their backs seem to be more of a hindrance. Unlike the week before passes were going astray and the general play seemed to be lacking cohesion. But the home team were first out of the blocks when, in the tenth minute, centre Matt Bater crossed for the opening try. Within a minute of this Jordan Aherne was showed a red card. This seem to lift the visitors as they threw everything they had at the home team for the next twenty five minutes. Gorey were struggling, but just before halftime Eoin Walsh settled the nerves as he crossed for his first, and Gorey's second try, for the home crowd to breathe a collective sigh of relief. Stephen Horan converted. 12 - 0 was how it was at halftime.

The second half saw the home team up their game as Captain JP Redmond led from the front. But it was Eoin Walsh who, when in receipt of the ball, showed huge tenacity as he powered over for Gorey's third try. On fifty five minutes he turned up again to score his third try, after he cut in from the wing, to show a clean pair of heels to the Dundalk defence. Two further tries from JP Redmond and Stephen Gardiner saw Gorey close out the game on a score of 36 - 0.

All credit must go to this young Dundalk team as they never gave up until the final whistle. JP Redmond & Daragh Bellanova were the pick of the forwards with Matt Bater and Man of the Match Eoin Walshe showing well in the backs. Gorey J1 's have no match until Sunday week when they are at home to Monkstown in the postponed League game. The J2's are away to De La Salle next Saturday with their first round Cup match v Enniscorthy on Sunday week.

The second round saw Gorey draw local rivals New Ross which will be played on February 21st in Clonattin.
