J1s STAY 2ND IN LL DIV 1 A   17/01/2016

Gorey travelled to Dublin last Saturday for a match against bottom of the table Suttonians. In stark contrast from a week earlier a dry pitch with no wind provided good conditions for both teams.

It did not take long for the visitors to set out their stall when a decisive break by Matt Bater saw him cross for the opening try, Stephen Duke converted. Gorey kept up the pressure and on 17 minutes Captain JP Redmond crossed to extend Gorey's lead to 14 - 0. Suttonians came more into the game and could have crossed the line but for a knock on at a crucial stage. Gorey soaked up another bout of home pressure and a turnover and quick hands, saw them move the ball at pace, for Stephen Horan to cross for try number three. Things got worse for the home team with a red card for Suttonians lively second row as Gorey ended the half 21 - 0 to the good.

The second half saw more of the same with Suttonians working their socks off to keep Gorey at bay. The bonus point was secured early when Eoin Walshe intercepted a Suttonians move, he raced for the line and, when almost caught, gave a beautiful reverse pass for the supporting Andrew Walshe to run in to score. When they could Suttonians tried to move the ball wide but, with just fourteen men, the Gorey defence was proving hard to crack. Further tries from Willie Earle and Garret Bater saw Gorey run out comfortable winners on a score of 42 - 0. After a 14 month absence Gorey were delighted to welcome back Nevil Copeland and he did not disappoint as he showed some good touches. Despite the score Suttonians never gave up and were unlucky on a few occasions not to come away with a score. Stephen Gardiner, Richard Deering and Daragh Bellanova were excellent in a good pack performance with John Condren, Stephen Duke and man of the match Matt Bater the pick of a lively back line.

Next Saturday night with a 7.30 kick off Gorey welcome League Leaders Enniscorthy to Clonattin. The corresponding fixture at Ross road was a thriller, and this one promises to be no different, as these two Wexford teams are placed one and two in Division 1A.
