Gorey record a home win over Suttonians in LL Div 1A   01/11/2015

GOREY J1s IN SECOND PLACE IN DIVISION 1A

After a three week break Gorey were back in business in round 4 of Division 1A. Last time out Gorey edged out Dublin's Monkstown on a score of 32 - 28. Last Saturdays round 4 saw Suttonians, another Dublin team, make the trip to Clonattin. This was another big test for Gorey as the former AIL team's results have been improving with each game after a shaky start.

The home side were first out of the blocks with a Stephen Duke penalty. But from the restart Suttonians put some good phases together and after sustained pressure and quick hands saw them stun the home support with a cracking try. Gorey were not long until they were to cross the whitewash themselves as a line break by Eoin Walsh saw him put Andrew Holland through for a try under the posts. Gorey's second try was straight off the training ground when Shane O Leary found a hole in the visitors defence for try number two. Stephen Duke converted to extend the lead to 17 - 5. Suttonians kicked a penalty to reduce the arrears, but the home team kept on coming and on thirty minutes Jordan Ahern rounded off a fantastic move when he crossed for try number three. But Suttonians came right back and sloppy play allowed the visitors to score under the posts and convert to leave the score at 22 - 15 at halftime.

Gorey were blowing hot and cold and would need to up their game to put daylight between the teams. This they did with two Stephen Duke's penalties in the opening ten minutes extending the Gorey lead. Slowly Gorey were putting the phases together with the back row of Woods, Earle and Ahern starting to dominate the breakdown. This released the backs to punch holes in the visitors defence and another fantastic exchange between the backs and forwards saw Willie Earle finally cross for the bonus point. Gorey were now playing with confidence with backs and forwards exchanging passes, as they moved the ball at pace, this caused all sorts of problems for Suttonians and when fullback Gareth Bater crossed the line in for try number five it was no more than Gorey deserved. Suttonians never gave up and scored a well worked try. But further tries from Shane O Leary and Captain JP Redmond saw Gorey reach the half century to round off a good home win on a score of 50 - 22. Gorey had some strong performances from Captain JP Redmond, Michael Woods and Stephen Gardiner in the forwards, with Eoin Walsh, Andy Holland and Shane O Leary showing well in a lively backline.

While Gorey will be happy with their overall performance, the scoreline does flatter them. The next few weeks will bring bigger tests, as next Saturday they travel to Town Cup Champions and League leaders Enniscorthy for a top of the table clash. Their last visit saw Gorey edge out Enniscorthy in the South East Final, so the home team will be looking to reverse that result, and preserve their great start to this season. The following week sees Kilkenny in Clonattin which also promises to be an interesting game.
