With next Sunday's towns cup match away to Birr looming Gorey seconds had a league match against near neighbours Tullow in Clonattin. This was a match to iron out game plans  as both teams were now out of league contention and only the cup to come. Gorey started well and should have got on the score sheet as they controlled the majority of the early exchanges. But it was Tullow who weathered the storm and went on to get the first score after Gorey gave away a penalty. Immediately Gorey came right back after Killian Breen made a good break, quick ball through the backs saw Shane O Leary pass to Clement Power to race over for the opening try under the posts for Brian Brooks to convert. Further pressure saw Gorey extend their lead with a Brian Brooks penalty. Tullow not to be out done started to come more into the game and were unlucky not to score but good defending by the home team just about kept them at bay. Gorey were immediately back on the attack and again quick hands saw Shane O Leary put Shane Rafferty through for his first try for Gorey for Brian Brooks to convert. 17 3 is how it remained until halftime.

The second half saw Tullow up their game and put the home team under pressure. But the Gorey defence was proving hard to breakdown. Finally Tullow did manage a try which they converted to take the score to 17 10. Gorey immediately went back on the attack and a number of good phases saw scrum half Robert Harrington crash over to put two scores between the teams at 22 10. That is the way that it stayed as both teams turn their attention to the Towns Cup next sunday. 

Tom Tomkins, Colin French and captain Ciaran Hennessy stood out in the forwards while Brian Brooks, Shane O Leary, Shane Rafferty and man of the match Robert Harrington were the pick of the backs. Next Sunday sees the J 2 s travel to Birr for their first round match of the Towns Cup.
