Gorey J2s narrowly lose out to Wicklow   04/01/2015

Gorey J2's travelled to Wicklow on Sunday last for their first game of 2015. Like their first team counterparts both are in contention for the league and Gorey knew that a win was vital to keep them in contention. The game was played in good conditions and the visitors were the first out of the blocks and after sustained pressure, from a lineout and maul, Fergal Bolger crashed over for the opening try for Clinton Furney to convert. Wicklow responded and after a Gorey infringement Mark Donoghoe kicked a penalty to reduce the score. Gorey responded well and went 10 - 3 up with a Clinton Furney penalty. The score remained like this until halftime.

The second half saw Wicklow up their game and with twenty minutes gone scored a well worked try with the ball moving through the backs for their fullback to cross for a try to reduce the score to 10 - 8. Gorey were soon back on the attack and good pressure from their pack saw Wicklow penalised for Clinton Furney to kick between the posts. From the restart Wicklow regained possession and after a number of phases crossed for their second try which drew the teams level. The conversion put two points between the teams and that was the way it stayed until the final whistle.

Gorey had some good performances in the pack with Fergal Bolger, James Freeney and Kenneth Rothwell the pick of the pack. Clinton Furney, Eddie Hughes and Sean Byrne were the best of the backs. Next up for Gorey is a home game against Kilkenny next weekend with a 1pm kick off.
