Gorey get off to a winning start
Last year's Division 2A Champions Gorey kicked off their season in the Leinster League Division 1B with an away win to Newbridge with a score of 32 - 10. On a glorious day for rugby Gorey started the game well and should have immediately scored after a great break by Ciaran Allen was eventually stopped just short of the Newbridge line. But further Gorey pressure saw the visitors rewarded when Andrew Walshe touch down in the corner.
Gorey's second try came from a turn over at a scrum with
Andrew Walshe again racing into the corner to score his second try with
just 15 mins on the clock. But Newbridge came back and, from a Gorey
attack, somehow manage to get a break to score under the posts to reduce
the score to 10 - 7. Gorey scored next with a Shane Luby penalty,
while Newbridge missed a similar chance. Another Newbridge penalty left
the score at 13 - 10 after 25 mins. Gorey again went back on the attack
with the ball going wide for prop Ciaran Allen to go over in the corner
to take the score to 18 - 10. Gorey went on to add a further Jeff Dunne
try which Shane Luby converted to leave the score at 25 -10 at the
break.
The second half started with Newbridge upping their game and
forcing Gorey deep into their 22. Gorey soaked up the pressure well,
with Newbridge missing an easy penalty.
The Big Newbridge pack
continued to take the game to Gorey, but found the visitors defence
hard to break down. Finally Gorey relieved the pressure and Neville
Copeland rounded off a good day with a try under the posts to leave the
score 32 - 10 for Gorey as the final whistle sounded.
Gorey had some
great performances from Captain Jordan Aherne, James Mulligan and Ben
Horan with the halfbacks of Garrett Bater and Shane Luby controlling the
game well.
Gorey's J2 had no game as Newbridge do not have a team in this league.
Gorey J1 and J2 teams are at home to Tullow next Sunday, kick off for J2s at 1.30 and J1s at 3 pm. Next Saturday, at 3pm, the J3's also kick off their League with a home fixture against Old Wesley.
