Gorey's Senior Men start the season with hard earned win

After a long lay off Gorey Senior men’s J1 team finally kicked off the much awaited 20/21 season with a Southeast league match against near neighbours Enniscorthy.

It was a surreal situation as both teams played in front of their management teams with no supporters allowed.

In ideal conditions the first 10 minutes was nip and tuck as the teams came to terms after a long lay off and with the new rules.

The Gorey pack were edging exchanges at the scrum and eventually this gave them territory and on their second visit to the Scorthy line were awarded a penalty try.

Enniscorthy came right back but struggled to break down the visitors defence with the Gorey defence securing a number of crucial turnovers at the breakdown. Gorey went up field again and sustained pressure saw them cross for try number two when Steve Gardiner touched down, Fionn O Loughlin converted.

The next ten minutes was all Enniscorthy as they moved the ball through the hands and at pace but without really causing any danger.  As they moved the ball wide the ever alert Flynn Donnelly saw a gap to intercept and he raced away from the Scorthy defence to go in under the posts,  Fionn O Loughlin added the conversion to take the score to 21 0 at halftime.

Both teams made a number of changes at the break. It was the home team who restarted the stronger and it was not long until they were rewarded with a try when Ivan Jacob crossed in the corner, Ivan Poole was just wide with the conversion.

Within minutes Gorey scored the try of the match when Fionn O'Loughlin gathered a clearance deep in his own half  he weaved through the Scorthy players to offload to on rushing Donnelly who  out stripped the covering defence to score a fantastic try that really did not look on.

Again Enniscorthy came back and scored a fine try after sustained  forward pressure saw them go over. Gorey upped their game and forced Scorthy deep in their half and a number of phases later they crossed for their fourth try when Stanley Hadden went over for Fionn O'Loughlin to add the conversion 33 - 10 was how it ended.

Gorey had some good performances particularly the back row of Breen, Hadden and Walsh, the backs were well served with Fionn O'Loughlin, Flynn Donnelly and Mikey Duke the pick.

This was a good workout for both teams as they begin their respective campaigns in the coming weeks. Both teams made mistakes but both will be delighted to have got back on the pitch and play rugby.

Next Sunday  Gorey will play Carlow at home kick off 3 o’clock
