Gorey welcomed Wicklow to Clonattin for Gorey's 1st match of the season in the South East League. The new season has brought on a few changes with new interpretations at the breakdown by the refs benefiting the attacking team, as well as rolling subs which gives coaches the opportunity to give the subs more game time by allowing 12 changes during the game.
Wicklow played last weekend and showed the extra game benefited as they started the stronger of the two teams. Gorey were struggling to get phases going, but as the game progressed, there game improved. Wicklow lead 17 to 3 at halftime  after Clinton Furney had kicked a penalty for Gorey and looked as if they could run away with a big score.
But Gorey showed that the hard work done in pre season had benefited and looked the stronger team in the final 20 minutes. Wicklow coach and X St Marys player Barry Lynn scored a solo try after chipping over the Gorey backline but from there on it was Gorey who dominated with JP Redmond and then Issac Porter scoring tries with Gareth Bater converting the second try.
It was great to see new Senior players Simon Whelan and Colin Power have great games up front, as well as new backs Tommy Martin, Sean Kinane and Ruairi ODonohue making there mark in the game. Simon Besanson showed the hard work done in Spain in the summer break paid off as he got through 80 minutes for the 1st time in 4 seasons. The ever committed Phil Swaine showed his amazing versatility by moving to hooker, with the experienced Ciaran Hennessy, Adrian Copeland and Paul Redmond lead from the front.
The arrival of Gareth Bater from Wales has boosted the club and his combination with older brother Matt Bater in the crucial 9 - 10 positions will ignite the attacking abillity of the team.
Player of the day was Issac Porter who had an outstanding game in the 2nd row. Its great to see young players like Issac come through the Gorey age group and now such a valuable member of the senior forward pack.

Next Friday Gorey travel to Carlow for the second South East League game. Kick off 7.30pm.

Simon Whelan, Philip Swaine, Ciaran Hennessy, Simon Besanson, Issac Porter, Adrian Copeland, Colin Power, Paul Redmond, Matt Bater, Gareth Bater, Ruairi ODonohue, Tommy Martin, Phil Furney, Clinton Furney, Simon Farrell
Subs, Conor Owley, Willy Carney, Noel Peppard, Wayne Pevoy and Sean Kinane

UNDER 15'S WELSH TOUR REPORT.

The under 15's travelled to Wales on Saturday  the 1th of May smartly turned out in their Gorey tour polo shirts finished off with Gorey crested jackets.  The tour began with a visit to the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff to watch the Welsh under 18 cup final.  This was followed by the team watching the Leinster Heniken Cup match.  The next day Sunday after a hearty breakfast the team travelled to Crymach R.F.C. where the A and B teams faced Crymach and Whitland R.F.C. respectfully in two excellent games of rugby.  Both Gorey teams came out the winners.  After a fabulous spread put on by Crymach which consisted of locally made pasties and sausage rolls to mention but a few items of this exceptional feast, the teams then travelled to Neyland R.F.C. to watch Crymach in an under 14 final and catch the Munster match.

The next day and the last day of our tour took in a visit to 'Oakwood' park where a great time was had by all including the coaches and parents as some of the photos will show.  A brilliant time was had by everyone and it was very rewarding to see all the team mixing so well in different settings and surroundings.  Comments were even made to me by hotel guests where we stayed, that we had a very well behaved bunch of lads and it is a credit to them that comments like these were being passed.  A special thanks to the John and William Willoughby, Paul Walsh and Maurice Hughes who assisted Peter Earle, Ivan Kelly, Paddy Sinnott and myself in making it a very successful tour and here's to many more.

GOREY 19     CARLOW 17

Gorey rugby club U15's became the South East Champions in Clonlattin last Saturday in a tough and bruising encounter against a strong well organised and determined Carlow side.  The match played on one of the best days weather wise this year was going to be a test of true grit character and fitness. With K.O. at I pm and with a great crowd in place the match got under way.  Straight from the start Gorey went on the attack but it was Carlow after only a couple minutes broke through Gorey's backline defence and scored the first try in the corner.Gorey were awarded a penalty later and got 3 pts of their own however it was Carlow who had their heels up and were playing some nice rugby and a couple of minutes later broke through again to go 14 pts to 3 up.  At this point the Gorey team were shelled shocked and could just as easily put their hands on their hips and switched off, but no the opposite happened knowing that they had been the beaten finalists last year in this competition and been so close on so many occasions in many Leinster Leagues etc, this team were determined to prove their true ability, and with some soul searching and team talking, they started to claw their way back into this game. Sometime later, after some good forward play a penalty was awarded and with pressure on him James Nolan slotted over the another 3 points for Gorey and marked the start of their come back.   Another penalty was to follow and this brought the scores to 14pts to 6pts for Carlow at half time.

Gorey made a couple of substitutions and brought on Eoin Walsh to the scrum and Cathal O'Neill to the backline and returned after halftime knowing that this game was not over for them, straight from the restart got stuck in and with some great scrumaging by hooker JJ Earle Gorey began to win more ball and on a couple of occasions were stopped just short of the Carlow line.  But after Carlow soaked up a lot of pressure they eventually gave in to a perfectly worked try from a lineout which Jack Cleary intercepted and made a break for the line and after 4 phases of play Josh White went over to score a superb try which was duly converted by James. The score now was 16pts to 14pts for Gorey and with their heads up Gorey were determined not to let this game slip away from them. With some excellent forward play by Harry Woods, Dermot Wildes and Charlie Wildes they battled bravely in the baking heat of the day and kept turning over balls they were not entitled to.  However it was Carlow who scored next after been awarded a penalty for holding on on the ground and got 3 pts to bring the score to 17pts to 16pts in favour of Carlow. Gorey at this stage showed what team work is all about and with everybody working tirelessly to win ball they were rewarded with a penalty kick for offside on the 22 which with a silent crowd (Capt) James Nolan step up and slotted it over under some pressure. In a game this close this final whistle can never come to early and when it did their were great scenes of celebration all over the pitch. Great credit has to be paid to Carlow who put it up to Gorey in a brilliant game. The celebrations ended with Gorey been presented with the 'The John Byrne Cup' and medals for all players

Team: Josh White,  Patrick Lancaster, Patrick Chapman,  Micheal O'Brien, Gary Dowling, (Capt) James Nolan, Chris Martin, Zach Sinnott, Jack Cleary, Dermot Widles, Charlie Wildes, Harry Woods, Sean Mahon, JJ Earle, David Condren, Eoin Walsh, Cathal O' Neill, Aaron O'Rourke, Tom Sinnott, Senan Farrell, Robert Willoughby and Eric Lacey.
